Vietnam pulls you in quickly. Pho steam rising through a Hanoi laneway at dawn, Ha Long Bay sitting glassy and green first thing in the morning, Hoi An lighting up with lanterns as the sun drops. It's a country that rewards slow travel just as much as ticking off the highlights.

But when's the best time to visit Vietnam? That depends on where you're headed and what you want out of the trip. Vietnam stretches over 1,600 kilometres from north to south across several climate zones, so the weather in Hanoi can be completely different from what you'll get in Ho Chi Minh City on the same day. The upside is that somewhere in Vietnam is almost always having good weather, regardless of when you go.

In short: the best time for a full Vietnam holiday is February to April or October to November, when good weather overlaps across all three regions. For specific regions, keep reading.

Understanding Vietnam's climate

Vietnam is long and narrow, running down the eastern edge of the Indochina Peninsula. Mountains in the north, a long coastline through the centre and wide river deltas in the south create three distinct climate zones. Getting your head around these zones is the key to timing your trip right.

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa) gets four distinct seasons, with cool, dry winters and hot, humid summers
  • Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An) has its own rhythm, with a dry season through much of the first half of the year and a wet season that kicks in later
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) is tropical year-round, with a clear wet and dry season

You can be drinking Vietnamese coffee in cool mountain air in Sapa and swimming off a beach in Phu Quoc a few days later. Not many countries give you that kind of variety.

October to December - the sweet spot

If Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and the northern highlands are on your list, October through December is hard to beat. The worst of the summer heat has passed, skies tend to be clear and everything is still green from the wet season. Hanoi sits in the mid-20s during the day, which is comfortable for walking the Old Quarter, getting out on Ha Long Bay or spending a few days in the Sapa rice terraces.

March to April - a good alternative

Spring is mild, the flowers are out and the tourist numbers are lower than the Oct-Dec peak. Good option if you'd rather avoid the busy months.

What to expect in summer (May to September)

The north's summer months are hot and humid, with regular rainfall and the chance of tropical storms. Afternoon downpours are common and the humidity can be full-on. If you're comfortable with that and want fewer crowds, it can still work well.

Winter in the far north (December to February)

Sapa and the far northern highlands get genuinely cold in winter, with temperatures occasionally dropping close to freezing. Pack proper warm layers if you're heading up there. Hanoi stays cool but manageable, around 15 to 20 degrees.

February to August - dry and warm

Central Vietnam, where you'll find Hoi An, Hue and the beaches around Da Nang, is at its driest and warmest from February through to August. This is your window for beach days, wandering Hoi An and eating your way through one of the best food regions in the country.

Peak heat comes in around June to August, when temperatures can push into the mid-30s. If you prefer it slightly cooler with the same dry weather, February to May is the pick.

September to January - the wet season

The central coast's wet season runs roughly from September through January, with October and November copping the heaviest rain. Flooding can occasionally affect low-lying areas around Hoi An and Hue. If central Vietnam is the main draw, aim for the drier months.

November to April - the dry season

Southern Vietnam covers Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta's floating markets and the beaches of Phu Quoc. The dry season from November to April brings warm, sunny days around 30 degrees with very little rain. It's the most popular time to visit the south, and for good reason.

A Mekong River cruise is one of the best ways to see the region during this window. The cruise takes you through quiet villages and along riverbanks where daily life hasn't changed much in decades.

May to October - the wet season

The wet season is warm, with tropical showers most afternoons that are heavy but pass quickly. Mornings are usually clear, so you can still get plenty done before the rain comes in. The Mekong Delta looks its best in the green season, and hotel rates tend to be lower. If you don't mind afternoon rain, the wet season is quieter, cheaper and just as enjoyable.

Festivals and events worth timing your trip around

Vietnam's cultural calendar is worth factoring into your timing.

  • Tet (Lunar New Year) falls in January or February and is the biggest event on the Vietnamese calendar. Streets fill with flowers, families gather for long meals and most businesses shut for several days. It's a great time to experience the culture up close, but book well ahead because transport and hotels fill up fast.
  • The Mid-Autumn Festival in September or October is worth catching if you're travelling with kids. Lantern processions, mooncakes and lion dances take over towns across the country.
  • Every full moon, Hoi An turns off its electric lights for the Lantern Festival. The old town glows with silk lanterns and candle offerings float down the Thu Bon River. Check the lunar calendar and try to time your Hoi An visit around it.

How long is the flight to Vietnam from Australia?

Direct flights from Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City take around eight to nine hours, and flights to Hanoi are similar. From Melbourne, expect roughly the same. Brisbane is slightly shorter at around seven to eight hours. From Adelaide or Perth, you'll typically connect through Sydney, Melbourne or an Asian hub like Singapore or Bangkok, with total travel times around 11 to 14 hours depending on the layover.

What to pack for Vietnam

Pack light and breathable. Cotton or linen works well for the heat. Bring a rain jacket or compact umbrella for wet season months, and shoes you can walk in comfortably on uneven streets and temple steps. Sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent are non-negotiable. If you're visiting temples, you'll need something that covers your shoulders and knees. And if Sapa or the northern highlands are on the itinerary between December and February, bring proper warm layers.

Vietnam is an easy country to shop in if you forget something, so don't stress about overpacking.
